Adaptive Gamers

2019 | 14’ | Germany
Emirhan Eringen

‚Adaptive Gamers‘ is a desktop documentary that explores the role of gaming in the lives of adaptive (disabled) gamers who are active on Twitch either as streamers and/or as active members of the community. Inspired by anthropologist Tom Boellstorff’s approach to theorize both ‘digital’ & ‘physical’ as equally important components of the ‘real’ life, Skype interviews were conducted with 4 adaptive gamers, followed by the recording of their Twitch sessions where they demonstrated the physical aspects of their way of gaming. Since their journey on the digital realm is equally important, their computer screens were captured while gaming as well. Throughout the film, adaptive gamers elaborate on how they perceive the role of gaming in their lives and how do they create meaning through this platform which they consider as a ‘level playing field’.
