Breaking the rules? Power, participation, transgression
The 15th SIEF congress was hosted by the University of Helsinki, Finland’s largest and oldest academic institution (est. 1640). With the theme Breaking the rules? Power, participation and transgression.
Original plan was to invite our delegates physically to Helsinki, that vibrant capital city by the Baltic Sea with an Arctic twist known for its laid-back and safe atmosphere, its internationality and open-mindedness, and the proximity of urban culture and mesmerising nature. However, people plan and the fates laugh...
Due to uncertain situation caused by COVID-19, the SIEF2021 Scientific Committee decided to hold the congress fully online. The University of Helsinki’s work moved online. Combined with the uncertainties in funding, travel and insurance and the very different restrictions applied within Europe and beyond, it became obvious that the fairest thing was to offer a congress that is equally accessible – financially and physically – to all participants.
Organisers were deeply saddened by not being able to meet in Helsinki, but worked hard to build a rewarding conference experience for all, from papers and panels to informal encounters and networking. The congress was one to remember: with spectacular keynotes, innovative – rule-breaking – events and the opportunity to experience the Arctic through a unique music programme – all online in Helsinki.
