Events
There are many other events taking place, beside the panels/workshops and plenaries. These are all described below. Unless a location is stated, these take place in the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Throughout the week
The Film programme, Tower B, Piso 1, Aud. 1
There will be a film programme screening films throughout the nine panel sessions of the congress.
Posters, Block 1, Piso 0, Hall
The possibility to put up posters provides everyone with the opportunity to present their work, without overburdening the programme, and incorporates those who do not wish to present orally. Posters confirm to the same basic requirements as papers. Posters will be displayed throughout the Congress, with poster presenters available at their respective display to discuss their topic with colleagues, on Tuesday lunchtime, 13:30-14:30.
Publishers book fair, Block 1, Piso 0, Room 42, 18-20 April from 11:00 to 19:00
There will be over 15 publishers presenting books during the Congress, in the room below reception. Do please take time to browse their stalls and talk to their representatives.
Book launches, 11:00-11:30, 16:00-16:30, Block 1, Piso 0, Room 42
There will be several informal book launches during the morning and afternoon tea and coffee breaks during the week. These will be advertised during the congress and listed on the publishers page. Do pop into the publisher space to see what's happening.
Sunday 17th April
Opening session, 16:00-17:00, Reitoria
The congress will open with a welcome from the head of the local committee, who will introduce representatives from the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas and the Lisbon Municipality. This will be followed by the jubilee lecture by Bjarne Rogan, entitled, 'A remarkable Congress and a beloved General Secretary. Or: CIAP, SIEF and Jorge Dias'.
Welcome reception, 19:00-21:00, Castelo
The welcome reception will take place from 19:00 onwards in the historic Lisbon St. George Castle, above the centre of town. Do come along to catch up with colleagues and enjoy some port wine, traditional hors d'oeuvres and live music by Quarteto Zyryab. The welcome reception is generously supported by Lisbon Municipality (CML - Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and EGEFAC). Please note that the public transport option for getting to the Castle, includes a ten minute, steep, uphill climb. The less fit should consider sharing a taxi to the gate. The uneven surface inside makes the wearing of heels inadvisable.
Monday 18th April
Inaugural meeting of a SIEF working group for student affairs, 13:30-14:30, Tower B, Piso 5, Aud. 3
This aim is to create a forum that enables international networking at a student level in our disciplines. We intend to open up this working group for all SIEF members with a focus on BA, MA and PhD students; but also invite the participation of staff of academic institutions dealing with student affairs, for example with the ERASMUS exchange program.
The new working group will bring young academics to SIEF at an early stage in their academic careers. Due to the Bologna Accords and the forthcoming academic Europeanisation, international networking and cooperation is increasingly recommended and necessary for both academic careers and achievements. Yet it is difficult to acquire these skills at a student level. The working group will provide opportunities to participate in the international network of SIEF for the benefit of young ethnologists’ academic performance.
Please come along and contribute your voice and views to the new group.
SIEF Young scholar prize and presentation, 18:15-18:50, The
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
The SIEF Young Scholar Prize has been won by Wichra Barova of the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore Studies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; she will give a presentation inside the Gulbenkian Foundation, and be awarded her prize.
Working Group meetings, 19:30-20:30
Some of SIEF's various working groups are taking the opportunity the congress provides to gather and discuss:
- Historical analyses (Tower B, Piso 1, Aud. 1)
- The ritual year (Tower B, Piso 3, Aud. 2)
- Ethnology of religion (Tower B, Piso 5, Aud. 3)
- Cultural heritage and property (Tower A, Piso -1, Aud. 1)
- Place Wisdom (Tower A, Piso 1, Aud. 1)
Tuesday 19th April
Poster presentations, 13:30-14:30, Block 1, Piso 0, Hall
The creators of the various posters are requested to be beside their posters during the second half of Tuesday's lunch, so as to be able to answer questions from delegates. Do please come along and find out more.
SIEF General Assembly, 18:30-20:00, The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
This will be opened by a Presidential address from Ulli Kockel, the SIEF President. All members are encouraged to attend. Reports from the SIEF board and all SIEF Working Groups will be presented; there will be an election of the SIEF Board. View the agenda (PDF) and the election candidate statements (PDF).
Wednesday 20th April
Congress banquet, 21:00-03:00, Casa do Alentejo
Guests will be served port wine as they enter this famous old restaurant from the street. Upstairs, they will sit to a sumptuous four course meal, followed by tea and coffee, and of course accompanied by good wine. After dinner there will be a cash bar and various entertainments, including a fado performance and local band, King Mokadi of Lisbon whose sound reflects their diverse backgrounds from Africa, the Americas, Portugal and Europe. Bringing trad-folk music to the urban dancehall, this is sure to have you dancing until the early hours.
Entry is by pre-bought ticket only. This will be a great night out for just 35€, so if you don't already have a
banquet ticket and are now regretting it, please email congress(at)siefhome.org to request this addition to your
registration.
