SIEF2021 15th Congress

Helsinki, Finland
19-24 June 2021

Breaking the rules? Power, participation, transgression

Call for audio/visual media

The Society for International Ethnology and Folklore invites audio/visual submissions to be screened or presented during its 15th Congress, which will be held online from the 21st to the 24th of June 2021. The theme of the Conference is "Breaking the Rules: Power, Participation, Transgression". This broad, engaged theme encourages new forms of attention and ways of thinking, whether it implies decolonial modes of representation, or takes power, participation and transgression as its point of focus. For the audio/visual programme, we encourage submissions that play with the rules of image and sound production, calling also for hybrid forms of authorship, defamiliarised formats of presentation and countered hierarchies of production. Ethnologists, folklorists, cultural and social anthropologists, and representatives of related disciplines (e.g. urban planning, architecture, design) and institutions (museums, archives, etc.), as well as filmmakers and other artists (e.g., photographers, sound designers) are encouraged to submit films, photographs, audio works, digital installations and other web-based or digital formats.

Important dates

  • 13 November 2020 (Friday) to 1 February 2021 (Monday): period for submission of abstract and links to material
  • 5 March 2021 (Friday): announcement of selection committee’s decision
  • 8 March 2021 (Monday) to 14 May 2021 (Friday): period for final screening links

Criteria for submission

  • Work must have been completed after 1 January 2019
  • Work that is not originally in English must be subtitled in English
  • All lengths are accepted

How to submit proposals

First phase – selection process (submission until 1 February 2021):
To make a submission, please fill in the online submission form. In your abstract, please be sure to give details of both the content and form of your work (explain clearly whether it is e.g. a film, a digital photo essay, a sound piece, etc. and specify how it should be screened/streamed/presented, including technical details). The form also includes a field for a link to a shareable online version (on Vimeo or YouTube). The link may be unlisted or password protected. In the latter case, please also be sure to provide the password in the form.

The authors and/or producers of the selected work will be informed individually about the selection results; the official selection will appear on the conference website by 19 March 2021. The authors and/or producers of the selected pieces must then send the online/screening copy of the material by 14 May 2021. We firmly encourage the presence of the creators/directors/producers in the screening sessions during the conference itself, as the purpose of these sessions is to provide a space for critical thinking and debate on audio/visual ethnographic work.
